Fr. Michael Garcia, OP, LCSW is a Roman Catholic priest of the Order of Preachers (Dominicans), and has been a Licensed Clinical Social Worker for thirteen years. He also has the Illinois Type 73 School Social Worker certificate. Previously, he had ten years’ experience as teacher, counselor, and chaplain at Chicago area Catholic high schools. He then earned the Master of Social Work degree at Loyola University – Chicago, which provided intense preparation to counsel individuals, groups, and families. For the next four years, Fr. Garcia served as psychotherapist for adolescent foster children at a non-profit youth services agency, and then as clinical school social worker for older adolescents in a private therapeutic day school, for over ten years. His Spanish speaking ability has facilitated working directly with parents, foster parents and siblings of Hispanic youth. Fr. Garcia has facilitated therapy groups for adolescents, a highly effective intervention. He also recognizes how a person’s religious beliefs can strengthen their ability to cope with emotional distress. Fr. Garcia welcomes the opportunity to provide service, especially for young people and their families.
